Meet the Lab

The kit that started it all — 1,000+ classrooms and counting.

Lab 1 is the front door into electronics for students from middle school through college. It's the lab teachers start with, and the one students remember.

01

Build 30 real circuits — from LED blinkers to sirens.

Every experiment is a working circuit. Students wire resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, and ICs on an industry-standard solderless breadboard. No mystery — just electrons you can see.

  • Burglar alarm, night light, power supply, metronome
  • 555 timer oscillators, audio generator, police siren
  • Moisture detector, pest repeller, code oscillator

02

Learn the 11 most-used electronic components — by using them.

Students learn what each component actually does by plugging it into a real circuit and watching what happens.

  • Resistors, capacitors, diodes, potentiometers, photocells
  • NPN & PNP transistors, SCRs, 555 timer IC, speakers
  • Read resistor color codes, troubleshoot builds, fix mistakes

Learning outcomes

What students can do at the end of this lab.

  • Draw an atom and label each element.
  • Describe electron flow in a simple circuit.
  • Draw a simple circuit schematic and identify the elements required for current to flow.
  • Draw and identify basic electronics symbols.
  • Read the resistor color code and determine the value of any resistor.
  • Construct circuits on a solderless breadboard.
  • Correctly read ceramic disc and electrolytic capacitor values.
  • Select the correct components and build an electronic circuit.
  • Build a basic circuit using a potentiometer.
  • Use a photocell in an electronic circuit.
  • Construct a circuit from a schematic diagram.
  • Know when and how to use a capacitor.
  • Use a 555 Timer IC to build an oscillator.
  • Troubleshoot electronic circuits against their schematic.
  • Name the 11 most common electronic components and their functions.

Frequently asked

Answers for teachers, parents, and makers.

What grade levels is this lab for?

Mr Circuit labs work well for grades 6 through college. Middle schoolers use them as a first introduction to circuits. High school CTE and career-tech programs use them as the foundation for HVAC, automotive, robotics, and engineering pathways.

Does this lab require soldering or any power tools?

No. Every circuit is built on a solderless breadboard using pre-stripped jumper wires. The only power source is a 9-volt battery. Safe for classrooms, safe for students, and fully reusable.

How long does each lesson take?

Most lessons fit inside a standard 45–55 minute class period. The first few lessons are shorter (component introductions), and the later circuit builds may span two periods depending on pacing.

Can I order with a school purchase order?

Yes — public schools, districts, and nonprofits can order using a purchase order. Email us and we'll send a W-9 and a formal quote (usually the same day).

Is the lab reusable for next year's class?

Yes — that's the whole point. Components go back in the tray, and the lab resets for the next student. Replacement parts are available individually if something gets lost.

What's the difference between this lab and MC1-SET?

This lab is a single kit — one student, one breadboard. MC1-SET is the classroom bundle with 32 reusable experiment kits and full digital platform access. Most teachers ordering for a full class go straight to MC1-SET.
